Sunday
Sunday’s are my favourite day. Usually, we try and squeeze as much into the day as possible; a walk, cleaning the whole house, gardening and the list goes on. However, the days stay lighter for longer, meaning you really can fit everything in. Therefore Sunday’s can become the worlds longest day of doing everything, rather than relaxing.
BREAKFAST
Firstly we ate a late breakfast, with nectarines, bananas, nuts, seeds honey and yoghurt. This was followed by an Orkney Sourdough Cinnamon bun. It’s important to add that Karin makes the most beautiful breads, so we treat ourselves each week a cinnamon roll. You can see that they didn’t last long. Jack’s swiping in already! We place an order every week, and collect from a secure location in Kirkwall. So it couldn’t be easier, and I can’t resist her Swedish treats. To take a look at her beautiful bakes, see her Instagram here.
DRAWING
Secondly, drawing is my favourite of all weekend activities. However, I often put it off in preference for more pressing matters. For instance, urgently cleaning the kitchen! So, this weekend I finished off drawings, and sent them out to family and friends. The picture below is a father’s day card. I drew lots of different Orkney shells on offcuts of Somerset paper, and folded the finished drawing. I love the way that the lines carry across the folds. Hopefully it has arrived safely in Kent.
WALKING
Thirdly, walking is my favourite activity in Orkney. In my opinion, it’s the best way to experience the island. We had no idea it was the summer solstice on Sunday. We had a picnic at The Ring of Brodgar, by the loch side. Sitting down by the loch, we enjoyed an Orkney rarity, no wind! It was blisteringly hot, and we meandered around the loch. The walk circles two sets of Standing Stones, The Stones of Stenness and The Ring of Brodgar. The path takes you down the edge of Harray Loch and past the Ness of Brodgar. The path opens out to a bridge between two lochs. Here, there are Artic Terns viciously diving. I like to stay away from them as they’re notorious for swooping on passing walkers!
